How to play Amumu — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Amumu is a Tank jungler in Wild Rift built entirely around area-of-effect magic damage and hard crowd control rather than raw single-target burst. He's one of the simplest champions in the game to pick up — no skillshots to read, no intricate combo timing — but in the right hands he can delete a clumped enemy team by himself with back-to-back AoE stuns and a damage pool that scales off max HP. He won't win a straight 1v1 trade, but his value comes from forcing fights on his own terms and punishing any team that groups up.
Strengths
- Bandage Toss (Q) is a long-range hook that pulls Amumu straight to the target, letting him engage from angles the enemy doesn't expect and punish anyone who strays from their team.
- Curse of the Sad Mummy (R) is a wide, 1.5-second AoE stun — catch two or more enemies in it and the fight is often over before they can react.
- Despair (W) deals damage based on a percentage of max HP, so it chunks tanks and juggernauts almost as hard as squishies, which keeps Amumu relevant into any enemy composition.
- Extremely low skill floor: a rank-1 difficulty kit means new players can be immediately impactful just by landing Q into R.
Weaknesses
- Jungle clears are slow early and Amumu has no real escape besides a target-dependent Q, so aggressive invaders like Lee Sin can punish him before he has any tools to fight back.
- Low sustained single-target damage means he loses straight duels outright — a heavy-sustain opponent like Warwick simply outlasts anything Amumu can deal.
- His whole kit loses value against a team that refuses to group up — a scattered enemy turns Curse of the Sad Mummy and Despair into wasted cooldowns.
- Mobile champions with escape or team-saving ultimates, like Kindred, can dodge the engage entirely or undo it with a single ability, cancelling the teamfight he just started.
Combos
- Q → auto-attack → R → W: Bandage Toss pulls you onto a priority target and stuns them briefly; auto-attack on the pull to apply Cursed Touch, chain straight into Curse of the Sad Mummy to lock down everyone nearby, then drop Despair so the tears tick as bonus true damage while the group is stunned.
- R → W → E: Walking into range unseen — from a bush, fog of war, or a bad enemy overextension — open with the ultimate for the longest possible stun window, place Despair immediately under the group, then use Tantrum's slow so nobody walks out of the puddle before it finishes them.
- E → Q: In smaller skirmishes, Tantrum's AoE tick and slow wear down and slow a target trying to disengage, and Bandage Toss keeps them in kill range for your team instead of letting them walk away.
Skill order: W > E > Q (always take R at 5/9/13)
Early game
Amumu's early jungle clears are slow and he has no escape besides a target-dependent Q, so avoid contesting camps against dive-heavy junglers like Lee Sin and instead path toward lanes where you can set up a kill. Use Despair to soften camps efficiently and lean on Tantrum's passive damage reduction rather than trading damage directly with monsters. From level 3 onward, look for a gank the moment your laner has priority — Bandage Toss the extended target, and even without your ultimate, a 1-second stun next to your ally's damage is often enough to close out a kill. Play around your own jungle timers rather than forcing early skirmishes; Amumu's real power spike is level 5, not level 1.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From the mid-game on, Amumu wins fights by forcing the enemy to clump and then punishing that mistake — flank from a bush or fog of war and open Curse of the Sad Mummy the instant multiple enemies are within range, rather than walking in from the front like a second-wave tank. Prioritize whichever backline carry you can reach cleanly with Bandage Toss; pulling a fed marksman or mage out of position is usually worth more than stunning the frontline. Drop Despair right on top of your own stun so the percent-HP damage starts ticking immediately, and save Tantrum's slow for anyone trying to walk out of the puddle before the fight ends. Against a team that refuses to group, patience matters more than aggression — burning your ultimate on one or two targets often costs you the whole fight.
Pro tips
- Auto-attack a target during your stun window to apply Cursed Touch — once it's active, any magic damage they take, including Despair's tears, gets padded with bonus true damage for a few seconds.
- Hold your second Bandage Toss charge instead of dumping both at once; the spare charge is often your only follow-up engage, escape, or peel if the fight doesn't go the way you planned.
- Liandry's Torment and Sunfire Aegis both add their own damage-over-time on top of Despair, turning your tears puddle into serious sustained damage instead of just a zoning tool.
