How to play Gragas — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Gragas is a bruiser mage in Wild Rift who wins fights through positioning rather than pure burst damage: his barrels zone off entire areas of the map, and Body Slam turns his own body into a walking stun. He deals real magic damage, but his headline value is disruption — every cooldown he lands can scatter a formation, cancel an enemy engage, or hand a teammate an easy kill. He's forgiving to pick up early thanks to his bulk, but mastering the timing on his barrel and slam is what separates a Gragas who wins skirmishes from one who just soaks damage.

Strengths

  • Unmatched area disruption: Body Slam's knockback-stun and the ultimate's landing explosion can scatter an entire enemy formation in one sequence.
  • Tanky for a mage: solid base durability plus Drunken Rage's damage reduction let him win early skirmishes against duelists like Lee Sin, where his bulk forgives mistakes that would punish a squishier laner.
  • Strong early skirmish potential: a landed Body Slam refunds part of its own cooldown, letting him chain stuns faster than the tooltip suggests once a fight starts.
  • Flexible engage or peel: the same barrel-and-slam combo that starts a fight for his team can just as easily knock a diver off an ally who's being chased.

Weaknesses

  • Every core tool is a skillshot: Q, E, and R all require good reads on enemy movement, and whiffing the combo leaves him as a slow, low-damage tank.
  • No mobility outside Body Slam: once E is down he has no other gap closer or escape, so a sustain-heavy duelist like Warwick can simply outlast him if the interrupt misses.
  • Kiting, zone-based champions give him real trouble — Kindred, for example, can dodge his wide skillshots and use her own zone to cancel an incoming ultimate, leaving Explosive Cask to land on nothing.
  • Backloaded damage: without a real burst item like Rabadon's Deathcap online, his combo tickles rather than kills, since the kit leans on utility over raw numbers.

Combos

Skill order: Q > E > W (always take R at 5/9/13)

Early game

Lane off Q: roll a barrel onto minions or the enemy laner and time an auto-attack right as it detonates, since a fully fermented barrel deals up to 150% of its base damage and slow. His passive sip after every cast also gives him real sustain, so trade more freely than a typical squishy mage would need to. Save Body Slam for real trades and jungle ganks rather than farming with it — the stun and knockback matter far more with a jungler nearby, and landing it shaves time off its own cooldown so pressure snowballs faster than the tooltip suggests. Look for all-in windows once Drunken Rage, Body Slam, and an empowered auto line up, and don't force a fight when E is down, since it's his only way to close the distance.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

From the mid-game on, think of yourself as a space-controller rather than a damage dealer: hover near your backline or the chokepoint you want to hold, and use Body Slam to scatter divers before they ever reach your carries. Hold the ultimate until the enemy team commits and groups up — a well-placed Explosive Cask can knock their entire front line off an objective or away from your ADC, and even a partial hit buys your team time to reset. Because the kit is built around disruption rather than sustained damage, prioritize peeling and repositioning over chasing kills, and let your teammates clean up what the barrels scatter.
