How to play Katarina — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Katarina is a mid-lane Assassin in Wild Rift built around explosive magic burst and near-endless cooldown resets rather than sustained damage. She fights by scattering daggers around the battlefield and Shunpo-ing between them, chasing down squishy targets and refreshing her whole kit the instant a recently-damaged enemy dies nearby. She rewards sharp, calculated all-ins but punishes hesitation and misplays hard, since she has almost nothing to fall back on defensively.
Strengths
- Snowballs out of control once she lands a kill: Voracity refunds 15 seconds off every cooldown whenever an enemy champion she's recently damaged dies nearby, letting her chain straight from one kill into the next.
- Excellent against grouped enemies: Bouncing Blade (Q) hits up to 3 targets and Death Lotus (R) locks onto the 3 closest champions, so clumped fights and dive attempts are her ideal environment.
- Built-in mobility and repositioning through Shunpo (E), which can blink to a dropped dagger as well as an enemy, giving her both engage and escape utility from the same skill.
- Death Lotus stacks heavy grievous wounds on top of its damage, so she single-handedly shuts down enemy healing, lifesteal, and sustain during a fight.
Weaknesses
- An extremely fragile, low-utility glass cannon: if her all-in doesn't secure a kill, she has almost nothing left to survive the counter-attack.
- Death Lotus is fully cancelled by a single crowd control effect, so disciplined opponents save one stun, taunt, or knock-up specifically to interrupt her ultimate and end the fight instantly.
- Anti-magic tools such as magic shields or damage-reduction passives blunt a huge portion of her kit, since every point of her damage is magic with nothing physical to fall back on.
- Her engage is telegraphed: visible daggers on the ground and a limited Shunpo range let sharp opponents dodge, bait, or punish her jump-in before she ever gets her combo off.
Combos
- Q -> E -> Auto Attack: drop a dagger with Bouncing Blade, Shunpo onto it for bonus damage and a near-full cooldown refund, then auto-attack to close out a low-risk pre-5 trade.
- W -> E -> Q -> R: pop Preparation for the movement speed to close the gap, Shunpo onto the falling dagger to blink in for free, then Bouncing Blade and channel Death Lotus for the full all-in once your ultimate is up.
- E -> Q -> R: Shunpo straight onto an isolated target, Bouncing Blade to open damage, then immediately channel Death Lotus before they can escape or call for help.
- Kill -> Voracity reset -> re-engage: once a recently-damaged enemy dies nearby, every cooldown drops by 15 seconds, so throw a fresh dagger and Shunpo straight into the next-closest target to keep the chain alive.
Skill order: Q > E > W
Early game
Before level 5, play Katarina like a poke mage: use Bouncing Blade to clear waves and chip multiple targets at once, but only commit to trades when you can follow up with Shunpo onto a dropped dagger for the extra burst. Avoid overextending, since she has no hard escape beyond repositioning through E, and a single gank can end her lane early. Look for your first real all-in around level 5 once Death Lotus comes online - the goal is one clean kill to trigger Voracity and snowball the wave and lane from there.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From mid game onward, Katarina plays as a flanking assassin rather than a frontline fighter: hold out of vision, let the frontline clash first, then Shunpo through the side or jungle to delete the enemy's priority backline target. Once your burst lands, channel Death Lotus on the 3 closest enemies for sustained AoE damage and grievous wounds, but only after their hard crowd control has been used or baited elsewhere, since a single stun or taunt cancels the channel outright. Chase kills aggressively once you get one - Voracity's cooldown refund means the correct play is almost always to hunt the next-lowest-health target immediately rather than resetting to safety.
Pro tips
- Never Shunpo blind - make sure a dagger from Q or W is already on the ground (or about to land) before you commit E, so you get the cooldown refund instead of ending up stuck and exposed.
- Track the enemy's hard crowd control before ulting - Death Lotus carries your entire kill pressure in a fight, and a single interrupt turns your all-in into a free kill for the enemy.
- Play for the double or triple kill chain, not just the first one - after Voracity refunds your cooldowns, immediately look at the next-closest low-health target instead of disengaging, since that's where Katarina's real value comes from.
