How to play Kog'Maw — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Kog'Maw is a Marksman in Wild Rift built around corrosive magic damage rather than crit — the current China server (国服) build runs him as a full AP siege weapon, not a traditional on-hit ADC. He starts weak and painfully fragile in lane, but once Bio-Arcane Barrage is active and his AP core lands, he outranges and out-damages almost anyone in the game from a position of near-total safety. Every point of his kit is pure offense, which is exactly why positioning is the hardest and most important part of playing him.
Strengths
- Once Bio-Arcane Barrage (W) is active, his attack range and bonus magic damage per hit let him fight from further away than almost any other Marksman, punishing anyone who can't close the gap instantly.
- Living Artillery (R) hits harder the lower the target's health is and turns into a near-guaranteed kill on anything under 40% HP from absurd range, plus its passive quietly grants bonus attack speed at all times.
- Full AP itemization (Rabadon's Deathcap, Liandry's Torment, Blackfire Torch and friends) makes his damage scale exponentially into the late game — a finished Kog'Maw can out-damage most compositions in a straight fight.
- Caustic Spittle's armor/magic resist shred and Void Ooze's slow give him just enough tools to win extended trades and zone divers despite owning no dash or blink.
Weaknesses
- Zero mobility: no dash, blink, or hard disengage, so any gap-closer that actually reaches him — a jump, a dash, a flash-engage — usually ends the fight on the spot.
- Very weak early game: low base stats and no item power mean he loses most all-in trades before level 5 and before his first back, especially against lane bullies who can punish him early.
- His damage is conditional on standing still at maximum range with W active; forced repositioning from peel, zone control, or vision loss drops his DPS drastically.
- Icathian Surprise only delays his death by 4 seconds for a modest true-damage detonation — it's a consolation prize, not a real escape, so he still needs a peel-heavy team to actually survive fights.
Combos
- Q -> Auto-attack -> E: shred armor and magic resist with Caustic Spittle, weave in an attack, then drop Void Ooze behind you to slow the follow-up and control the trade.
- W -> kite autos -> Q: activate Bio-Arcane Barrage for range and bonus magic damage, then walk backward auto-attacking, adding Q only when you need the extra burst or shred to close out a duel.
- R -> Q -> auto-attack: snipe a target under 40% HP with Living Artillery for the near-execute damage, then clean up with Caustic Spittle and basic attacks as they try to disengage.
- E -> W autos -> R: slow an engaging threat with Void Ooze, kite it with W-buffed attacks, then finish with Living Artillery the moment it drifts out of your effective range.
Skill order: W > E > Q — and always rank Living Artillery (R) the moment it becomes available.
Early game
Play Kog'Maw as a poke mage, not a brawler — he has no tools to win a straight fight before level 5 or before his first AP item lands. Use Caustic Spittle to shred and chip from range, and hold Void Ooze to punish overextensions or to disengage rather than to initiate. Respect hard lane bullies who can punish him before his ramp exists, and against poke-heavy opponents only trade back when you can land Q's shred and follow with a full auto-attack rather than just eating chip damage passively. Prioritize surviving to your first power spike over contesting every last-hit.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From the mid-game onward, Kog'Maw wants to fight from the edge of the map, not the middle of it. Pre-poke with Living Artillery on anything under 40% HP for a near-execute, keep Bio-Arcane Barrage active and auto-attack from maximum range while your frontline holds the fight, and treat any incoming gap-closer as your cue to kite, not to trade. Assassins and divers who can close the distance in a single move punish exactly the stationary positioning that W rewards, so the instant one of them commits, back off immediately instead of finishing your combo. Target whoever is already low or already out of position with R, and let your team's engage draw attention while you stay at the very back and let the fight come to you.
Pro tips
- Living Artillery's damage scales with the target's missing health and jumps to a flat execute below 40% HP — hold it to finish a wounded target instead of burning it purely as poke; the value difference is enormous.
- Watch the mana cost on repeated R casts: firing it again within 8 seconds adds up to 40 extra mana per cast, capped at 400, so spamming it in lane will force you back early.
- Never trade or auto-attack without Bio-Arcane Barrage's bonus range active — without it you're just a fragile target standing in exchange range for no reason.
