How to play Mel — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Mel is a ranged burst Mage in Wild Rift, usually played in the mid lane, built around marking enemies for a delayed execute and punishing anyone who throws a projectile at her. Every point of her damage is magical, split between an artillery-style poke ability and a reactive shield that turns an opponent's own skillshot into free damage for her. She has a moderate learning curve - the real skill ceiling comes from weaving auto-attacks into her spell rotation and tracking exactly who is marked before she commits her ultimate.

Strengths

  • Radiant Volley fires seven projectiles in a single cast, giving her some of the best sustained poke and wave clear among mages, and every hit refreshes the Searing Brilliance mark that can outright execute a low-health target.
  • Rebuttal is a hard punish button: it blocks an incoming projectile, grants a full second of damage immunity plus a burst of move speed, and fires the attack straight back for 40% of its damage, which can win a trade against poke-heavy mages and marksmen on its own.
  • Solar Snare roots the first target hit for over a second and leaves behind a lingering slow-and-burn zone, so she can lock someone down long enough to land a full combo or deny an entire chokepoint in a teamfight.
  • Golden Eclipse detonates every enemy carrying the Searing Brilliance mark at the same time, so a teamfight where two or three targets are already marked can end the instant she presses R.

Weaknesses

  • Rebuttal only stops projectiles - it does nothing against dashes, jumps, or a melee all-in, so gap-closing champions like Kassadin, Yasuo, or Fizz can bypass her one defensive tool entirely.
  • Her burst depends on Searing Brilliance building up stacks within its 5-second timer, so a target she hasn't marked yet can survive an opening trade that looks lethal on paper.
  • She has no real escape - Rebuttal's speed bonus decays within a second, so once an enemy is on top of her with nothing left to reflect, she is very exposed.
  • Both her damage and her crowd control depend on landing skillshots from Radiant Volley and Solar Snare; missing either one costs her the mark stacks that make Golden Eclipse dangerous, not just the immediate damage.

Combos

Skill order: Q > E > W (max Golden Eclipse whenever it's available)

Early game

Lane behind Radiant Volley - its seven hits clear waves quickly and keep refreshing Searing Brilliance on the enemy laner, so poke every time they step up for a minion. Hold Solar Snare for the moment they commit to a trade or push too far, since the root plus the lingering zone usually wins the exchange outright. Play Rebuttal reactively against any opponent who leans on skillshots, since blocking and reflecting their main poke tool can swing the whole matchup in your favor. Only go for a kill once you have a couple of Searing Brilliance stacks on them, or your ultimate is ready to close it out.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

From the mid game on, stay at maximum range and tag as many enemies as possible with Radiant Volley and auto-weaves before the fight even starts, since Golden Eclipse only gets scarier the more targets are already marked. Use Solar Snare to zone a chokepoint or peel a diver off your backline, and save Rebuttal for the enemy's biggest incoming projectile, whether that's a poke ability or a game-changing ultimate. Time Golden Eclipse for the moment two or more enemies are carrying the Searing Brilliance mark, so the detonation lands as simultaneous burst instead of a single-target finisher. Items like Luden's Echo or Blackfire Torch push that spell-weave damage even higher, with Rabadon's Deathcap capping off the burst once the fight is already swinging your way.
