How to play Morgana — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Morgana, the Fallen Angel, is a control mage almost always played in the support role in Wild Rift, built to make one enemy's life miserable rather than to out-damage a marksman. Her kit pairs a long, punishing root with a shield that blocks crowd control outright, while Tormented Shadow provides steady magic burn that only gets nastier as her target's health drops. She's rated low difficulty to pick up, but timing Black Shield and picking the right moment for Soul Shackles is what separates a good Morgana from a great one.
Strengths
- Black Shield can fully block an incoming crowd control effect on an ally, making her a hard counter to engage-heavy champions like Leona or Blitzcrank when the timing is right.
- Dark Binding is a long, reliable 2-second root that turns one landed skillshot into a full follow-up kill for her team.
- Soul Siphon turns her own ability damage into free healing (20% against champions, cannon minions, and epic monsters), and Tormented Shadow's frequent ticks proc it constantly for real lane sustain.
- Soul Shackles can catch every nearby enemy champion at once, dealing 150 magic damage twice with a guaranteed stun on anyone who can't break the link, making it one of the best teamfight-swinging ultimates around.
Weaknesses
- No dash, blink, or hard escape, and low overall survivability, so once her cooldowns are spent she dies to almost any dive.
- Every disruption tool is a skillshot or a channel a target can simply walk out of, and cleanse/mobility supports like Milio undo her entire kit in one button.
- Long-range poke supports such as Sona out-trade her before Dark Binding is ever in range, and Soul Siphon's sustain isn't enough to win a pure poke war.
- Black Shield only ever protects one ally at a time, so any dive that splits onto a second target walks straight around her best defensive tool.
Combos
- Q → W → auto-attacks - Root the target with Dark Binding, drop Tormented Shadow underneath them immediately, then keep auto-attacking while they're stuck so the DOT ramps up against their draining health (up to +170% damage) as the fight goes on.
- R → Q - Open a fight with Soul Shackles to tag and slow a target (or several, since it hits every nearby enemy champion), then land Dark Binding on top for a near-guaranteed extra 2-second root before the shackle's own stun even triggers.
- E (on an ally) → follow-up Q/W - The instant a diver or hook commits onto your carry, shield them so the crowd control whiffs completely, then punish the wasted engage with your own root and burn instead of just playing defense.
Skill order: W > Q > E
Early game
In lane, lead with Dark Binding as your main trading tool: poke from max range and only all-in once you're confident the root will land, since Morgana has almost nothing to fall back on if it whiffs. Weave Tormented Shadow onto the wave or a trading enemy when it's safe rather than on cooldown - every tick can proc Soul Siphon for sustain and shave time off the skill's own cooldown. Keep Black Shield in reserve for a specific hook, engage, or burst combo instead of pre-casting it, and play with extra respect for hook-style lanes: one landed pick onto Morgana herself leaves her side of the lane with no protection until it comes back up. Ranged poke lanes are her hardest early matchup, since she has to close distance that Dark Binding can't threaten from a safe range.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From the mid game on, Morgana sits just behind the frontline and looks for the moment Soul Shackles can catch an overextended target or, ideally, a clumped group of enemies at once - the free vision and 3-second link buy her team time to collapse, and the delayed second hit guarantees a stun on anyone who can't create distance. Drop Tormented Shadow into the fray for burn that only gets stronger as health bars fall, and save Black Shield for whichever ally is actually winning the fight for her team, whether that means peeling a diver off her marksman or nullifying the enemy's opening engage outright. With no dash or blink of her own, she has to fight from range and commit her root or ultimate before she's ever the reachable target, since a teamfight is generally won or lost on whether those two land.
Pro tips
- Pre-aim Black Shield the moment an engage starts (a Leona swing, a hook animation, a diving assassin) - the shield only has to land a frame before the crowd control does to block it completely.
- Fire Dark Binding through a chokepoint rather than into a clumped wave: it stops dead on the very first thing it touches, so a stray minion or jungle monster will happily eat the root meant for a champion.
- Don't throw out Soul Shackles on reflex - whiffing it costs you your one game-swinging tool for its full cooldown, and remember true executes (Pyke's ultimate, for example) cut straight through Black Shield, so it isn't a universal save.
