How to play Nidalee — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Nidalee, the Wild Huntress, is a shapeshifting jungle Assassin in Wild Rift who fights in two completely different modes: a ranged human form built around magic poke and hidden traps, and a mobile melee Cougar form built for finishing kills. Nearly all of her damage is magic, delivered from a distance with skillshot spears before she closes in for the kill. She rewards precise aim and good timing with some of the highest burst and map pressure in the jungle, but punishes any misstep with very little health to fall back on.
Strengths
- Javelin Toss (Q) hits harder the farther it flies — up to 225 magic damage — letting her poke or snipe targets from well outside their effective range.
- Bushwhack (W) traps last a full 2 minutes with up to 4 active at once, giving her near-permanent vision and free damage across jungle chokepoints and river bushes.
- Prowl (Passive) grants bonus move speed in brush and toward Hunted targets, making her one of the slipperiest champions in the jungle for roams, ganks, and repositioning.
- Aspect of the Cougar (R) starts the match already at rank 1 and keeps refreshing its cooldown whenever she lands a Hunted mark, letting her flip between ranged and melee forms far more often than a normal ultimate would allow.
Weaknesses
- Extremely low base survivability — she's rated among the squishiest champions in the game, and a single clean burst combo from the enemy can delete her instantly.
- Her human-form damage tools are a skillshot and a placed trap: a dodged Javelin Toss or an avoided Bushwhack leaves her with no ranged answer until they're back up.
- Tanky, armored duelists like Rammus shrug off her magic burst and punish an all-in with hard crowd control, since she has no reliable escape once she's locked down.
- She has no hard defensive cooldown of her own, so anything that closes the gap through her kiting — a hard-engage ultimate, for example — can burst her down before she gets to react.
Combos
- Bushwhack (W) → Javelin Toss (Q) → Aspect of the Cougar (R): drop a trap where the fight is likely to happen, poke from max Q range to soften the target and land a Hunted mark, then shapeshift in to finish the kill in melee.
- Javelin Toss (Q) from max range → Aspect of the Cougar (R): whittle the target down with a full-distance spear first, then close the gap in Cougar form to finish what the poke started.
- Primal Surge (E) on self → camp or duel: cast it on yourself before or mid-fight to heal off incoming damage and gain attack speed for a faster jungle clear or a won skirmish.
- Hunted mark (Q or W) → R refresh → shapeshift again: tagging a target refreshes Aspect of the Cougar's cooldown, so chaining hits onto the same enemy lets you flip forms repeatedly within one extended fight.
Skill order: Q > W > E (level R whenever it's available)
Early game
Nidalee is one of the only champions who starts the match with her ultimate already at rank 1, so Aspect of the Cougar is ready for jungle clears and early skirmishes from the first minute. Spend this phase poking with max-range Javelin Tosses instead of trading in melee, and drop Bushwhack traps in river bushes and chokepoints for free vision and chip damage. Use Primal Surge on yourself between camps to heal up and clear faster, and only commit to Cougar form once you already have a Hunted mark down or a clean kill window — she has very little way to fight her way back out if it goes wrong.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
In teamfights, play Nidalee as a flanker rather than a front-liner: pre-place Bushwhack traps on likely engage paths and poke the backline with Javelin Toss to force cooldowns or land a Hunted mark before you ever commit. Save Aspect of the Cougar for a clean, isolated target — she carries too little health to dive the front line and survive the return damage. If the fight goes wrong and you don't have a kill lined up, shifting back to human form restores her ranged attacks, which can help her disengage instead of getting chained down in melee.
Pro tips
- Throw Javelin Toss from as far away as possible, or step back as you cast — the damage scales with travel distance, so a full-range spear can hit for well over double a point-blank toss.
- Place Bushwhack traps proactively in bushes, chokepoints, and camp entrances before a fight starts rather than during one — with a 2-minute duration and up to 4 traps live at once, you can blanket an entire side of the jungle.
- Build around her all-in burst — Lich Bane and Rabadon's Deathcap turn a landed combo into a kill — but don't skip Zhonya's Hourglass; with so little base survivability, buying a few seconds of safety right after you commit is often what turns a good engage into a clean one.
