How to play Nocturne — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Nocturne, the Eternal Nightmare, is a physical damage assassin in Wild Rift who plays less like a flashy combo character and more like a hunter: he tags a single enemy, closes the map-wide gap with Paranoia, and buries them before their team can help. He deals almost entirely physical damage, weaves in strong dueling sustain through Umbra Blades' on-hit healing, and only really comes online once he's hit level 5. He's straightforward to execute but terrifying to face, making him one of the better picks for players who want assassin-style kill pressure without a complicated combo to learn.
Strengths
- Devastating single-target burst: Duskbringer's damage, an empowered Umbra Blades auto, and Unspeakable Horror's damage over time all stack onto one enemy within a couple of seconds.
- Paranoia is a global executioner - it can lock onto any enemy champion on the map, blind their team's vision, and then deliver an unstoppable dash for guaranteed damage.
- Excellent self-sustain in skirmishes thanks to Umbra Blades' on-hit healing, plus free move speed from Duskbringer's trail and Unspeakable Horror's chase bonus, letting him win extended duels many assassins can't.
- Huge mid-game power spike: once he's level 5 with a Duskblade of Draktharr or Eclipse online, very few squishies survive a full combo.
Weaknesses
- Weak pre-5 identity: without Paranoia he has no true burst finisher, so early skirmishes and invades can go poorly against stronger early duelists.
- Extremely telegraphed engage: Paranoia's map-wide darkening effect warns the whole enemy team that someone is about to be hunted, giving them time to group up, ward, or flash away.
- Fully committal and single-target: hard CC that lands right as he arrives, such as a taunt or knock-up, can lock him down mid-combo and turn his all-in into a death sentence.
- No real disengage tools: everything in his kit pushes him toward the enemy, so a target with strong kiting, a safety mechanism, or better late-fight sustain can simply outlast or slip his one burst window.
Combos
- Q -> E -> AA: throw Duskbringer through the target to tag them and start your Umbra trail, lock them down with Unspeakable Horror's fear, and weave in an empowered auto so Umbra Blades procs for extra damage and healing.
- R -> R (recast) -> E -> AA: activate Paranoia to blind your target's vision from anywhere on the map, recast to dash in unstoppable for guaranteed physical damage, then chain the fear and an empowered auto to finish the kill before allies can help.
- W -> AA -> Q: hold up Shroud of Darkness to block the enemy's key spell, then immediately punish them with the upgraded attack-speed buff, an empowered auto, and Duskbringer while they're slowed and defenseless.
Skill order: Q > E > W
Early game
Nocturne is almost always played in the jungle in Wild Rift, and before level 5 he plays more like a sustain duelist than a true assassin. Clear camps efficiently by weaving autos with Duskbringer - every hit against monsters and champions shaves time off Umbra Blades' cooldown, keeping your damage-and-heal loop running. Avoid forcing long fights early since you have no real burst finisher yet; hold Shroud of Darkness reactively to block a counter-jungler's or ganking laner's key spell rather than firing it just for the attack speed. Prioritize hitting level 5 and completing your first core item, Duskblade of Draktharr or Eclipse, as quickly as possible, since that's when his actual kill pressure begins.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From level 5 onward Nocturne isn't a frontline teamfighter - his job is to erase the enemy carry's vision with Paranoia and end their game before the fight properly starts. Position on a flank or just outside sight so your recast dash arrives from an angle they can't peel for, fear-lock the target immediately with Unspeakable Horror so they can't kite or use their escape, and clean up with Duskbringer and empowered autos. Target priority is almost always the most threatening squishy, not whoever happens to be closest. If a peel or CC chain catches you instead of your intended target, save Shroud of Darkness for the biggest incoming threat so you can either finish the kill or slip back out.
Pro tips
- Weave autoattacks into everything you do - camps, minions, champions - since landing the empowered Umbra Blades hit on a champion or jungle monster cuts its cooldown by 3 seconds instead of the usual 1, letting you chain fear-and-burst windows far more often than the base 12-second timer suggests.
- Paranoia reveals itself to the whole enemy team the instant you activate it, so use that delay: the darkening effect alone often baits a Flash or forces a defensive item before you've even recast onto your real target.
- Build Serpent's Fang when the enemy has shields you need to punch through - a shielded target can survive your entire all-in, and matchups where the enemy's own engage tool arrives with a shield punish you hardest if you can't pop it first.
