How to play Ryze — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips

Ryze is Wild Rift's Rune Mage, a scaling mid-lane mage whose magic damage grows off bonus mana rather than pure ability power, so mana items hit almost as hard for him as raw AP would. His whole game plan is built around marking a target with Spell Flux (E) and then cashing that mark in through Overload (Q) for extra damage or Rune Prison (W) for a hard root, while weaving his spells together banks him short bursts of movement speed. He's a patient, combo-minded pick rather than a flashy one, and he only gets scarier the longer the game runs.

Strengths

  • Damage scales with bonus mana through Arcane Mastery, so mana items like Seraph's Embrace and Rod of Ages boost his output almost as much as pure AP would - few mages keep scaling this hard into the late game.
  • Spell Flux (E) splashes onto nearby enemies, giving him strong wave clear and multi-target poke without committing his whole combo to a single target.
  • Marking a target with Spell Flux before Overload (Q) turns Q into a bigger nuke that jumps between every marked enemy nearby - brutal against a team that's grouped up for an objective.
  • Rune Prison (W) converts into a hard root off a Flux mark, giving him real pick and lockdown potential even though he has no dash of his own.

Weaknesses

  • No hard mobility of his own - the short speed burst from Overload's Rune Acceleration is nowhere near a real gap-closer, so dash-heavy all-in threats like Fizz or Yasuo can close the distance and punish him before his root ever lands, especially pre-5.
  • Fragile for how much damage he puts out - without Zhonya's Hourglass or peel from allies, one clean engage is usually enough to kill him.
  • The whole combo hinges on landing Spell Flux first; whiff it against a slippery, mobile burst mage like Ahri and both Overload and Rune Prison fall back to their weaker base effects.
  • Realm Warp channels for 2 seconds and is cancelled by any stun, root, knock-up, or knockback on him, so it can't bail him out mid-fight - and late game, anti-magic scalers like Kassadin can shrug off an all-magic-damage kit entirely.

Combos

Skill order: E > Q > W (take an early point in W for the root/slow utility; level R whenever it's available at 5/9/13)

Early game

Lean on Spell Flux (E) to poke and clear the wave in the same motion, since its splash damage catches minions and your opponent together and lets you punish overextensions without extra effort. Watch your mana closely - Arcane Mastery rewards a mana-heavy build, but an empty bar leaves you with nothing to fight with. Hold Rune Prison (W) for the moment the enemy oversteps: a fresh Flux mark turns it into a root that punishes a bad walk-up or sets up a jungler gank. Against another scaling mage like Viktor, whoever wins the poke-and-wave-clear exchange first tends to snowball the lane. Play from max range before level 5 - you have no escape tool, so respect anything that can dive onto you.

Mid & late game — teamfighting

Once his mana items come online, Ryze turns into a scaling wrecking ball: mark the frontline or an overextended backline target with Spell Flux, then Overload to jump bonus damage across every other enemy carrying a Flux mark - this is where a grouped-up enemy team gets punished hardest. Stay at max range behind your frontline since you have no hard escape, and treat Zhonya's Hourglass as your out if you get focused down. Save Realm Warp for repositioning: flank onto a backline, answer a split-push, or route around a wall to contest an objective - and remember that landing from the teleport resets all your basic ability cooldowns, so arrive already planning your next full combo instead of easing into it.
