How to play Skarner — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Skarner is a tanky jungle fighter in Wild Rift built to lock down a single priority target and refuse to let go. His damage blends physical hits from his boulder-empowered attacks with magic damage that his passive stacks up over time, scaling off the target's max HP, so he threatens squishies and tanks alike. Rather than winning fights through raw output, he wins them by suppressing a key target with his ultimate and dragging the fight to wherever his team is standing.
Strengths
- Game-changing pick potential: his ultimate suppresses up to three enemy champions for 1.5 seconds and drags them along as he moves, so one clean R can single-handedly remove a carry from a fight.
- Scales against any comp: his passive builds bonus magic damage based on max HP, and both Q and R also deal a percentage of the target's max HP, so he stays relevant even against stacked tank lineups, not just squishies.
- Engage and disengage in one kit: E dashes through terrain to grab and drag a target, with a stun if they're slammed into a wall, while W's instant shield and AoE slow work just as well to buy time and retreat.
- Self-sufficient in the jungle: the attack speed from Q and the burst damage from W let him clear camps quickly without needing much outside help.
Weaknesses
- Early jungle pressure is contestable: more mechanically demanding junglers like Lee Sin can invade or out-clear him before his catch tools really come online.
- No real sustain: in an extended duel against a healing-heavy jungler like Warwick, he simply gets outlasted.
- His engage has a tell: E needs a direction and R needs contact, so shielded, ranged all-ins like Vi's ultimate or slippery kiting kits and zone tools like Kindred's can beat him to the punch or dodge the follow-up entirely.
- Weak cross-map mobility for a jungler: faster junglers like Hecarim consistently beat him to contested objectives by a matter of seconds.
Combos
- Q into AA x3 into E: pop Q first so your next three autos ramp up in damage and slow the target on the third hit, then follow up with E while they're already slowed to lock in the drag.
- E into R: dash in and drag your target with E, then suppress instantly with R so your team gets a free window to burst them down.
- W into E into R: open with W for the shield and AoE slow to survive the approach, gap-close with E, then finish the pick with R.
- Q (still active) into R: cast R while Q's first cast is still going and Skarner automatically throws the boulder first, tacking on extra AoE damage right before the suppress lands.
Skill order: Q > W > E (max R whenever it's available)
Early game
Skarner's early levels are about clean jungle clears rather than forcing fights: Q's attack-speed buff and its follow-up on-hit damage chew through camps fast, and W's AoE burst plus shield keep him healthy through tougher clears like Raptors or Blue. His kit only really turns on once E and R come online, so expect to path carefully and avoid obvious counter-jungle routes against sharper early junglers like Lee Sin. Once E unlocks, look for ganks on overextended laners near walls, since the drag only stuns if you actually slam the target into terrain.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From the mid game on, Skarner's job is to dive past the frontline and remove the biggest threat rather than trade blows with enemy tanks. Use E to close the gap or drag an overextended target back toward your team, then follow with R to suppress up to three enemies at once and pull them exactly where your team can burst them down. Landing R also grants a burst of move speed and auto-completes an active Q throw, so weaving the ultimate into a fight rewards good sequencing rather than saving it as a last resort. Hold your position just behind the frontline until you see a clean entry, since his tankiness only pays off if the engage actually connects.
Pro tips
- If you can't stick to a target for all three empowered autos, recast Q early to throw the boulder instead: you still get the bonus max-HP damage and the slow, just delivered as a thrown hit rather than a melee one.
- Delay your R by a beat when Q's first cast is still active, since casting the ultimate auto-finishes the Q throw first, tacking on extra AoE damage right before the suppress lands.
- Aim your E toward walls whenever you can: the stun only triggers if the dragged target actually collides with terrain, so a grab across open ground is just a slow drag with no stun payoff.
