How to play Vex — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Vex is a ranged Mage played in the mid lane in Wild Rift, and her whole kit is built to punish greed: dash or flash anywhere near her and she marks you with Gloom, feeding a fear that turns your own engage into a free trade for her. She deals almost pure magic damage from range, chipping HP with the double-hit Mistral Bolt, slowing and marking targets with Looming Darkness, and closing out fights with Shadow Surge, an execute dash that resets its own cooldown on a kill. She wins through patient poke and punishing overextension rather than mechanical outplay, and she snowballs hard the moment a target is marked.
Strengths
- Doom 'n Gloom turns enemy engage against them - any dash or flash near Vex marks the target with Gloom, and her next ability hit fears them, wasting their cooldown and opening a free trade or kill.
- Mistral Bolt (Q) is very safe, high-value poke - the mist cloud expands, then shrinks and speeds up, so a single cast can threaten the same target twice from max range.
- Shadow Surge (R) snowballs fights - the recast detonates for 150 magic damage, and killing the marked target within the reset window brings the ultimate straight back up to chain onto the next kill.
- Strong lane zoning into melee mages, divers, and dash-reliant assassins, since Personal Space's shield plus shockwave punishes anyone who walks into range.
Weaknesses
- No personal mobility of any kind - no dash, blink, or hard escape beyond the conditional passive fear, so once that's spent she can be run down like any other immobile mage.
- The fear only fires off an enemy dash, flash, or a landed Doom hit - a champion who never needs to dash, like Twisted Fate picking her apart with cards from range, denies her best defensive tool completely and just outshoves her wave.
- Loses hard to anti-magic or dash-immune divers who close distance regardless of her fear - Kassadin's spell shield and late jumps ignore a fear she's already spent, and Galio can shield through her poke and engage straight out of the fog of war.
- Even matchups she wins in lane don't always translate to the map - she punishes Ahri's dash-in with a fear, for example, but Ahri still roams faster and safer than Vex can ever follow.
Combos
- Looming Darkness (E) into Mistral Bolt (Q), then Personal Space (W) - slow and mark the target first, then land both hits of Q and the W shockwave while they're stuck in the slow; the standard poke-and-trade in lane.
- Looming Darkness (E) into Shadow Surge (R), then recast R - E slows and Gloom-marks the target, the first R dash tags them, and the immediate recast detonates for the real damage; her core all-in and kill pattern from level 5 on.
- Bait a dash into the passive fear - hover at the edge of your range so a diver has to close the gap themselves; the dash marks and fears them off your very next ability, letting you freely land E or Q while they're locked down.
- Full burst: Looming Darkness (E) into Mistral Bolt (Q), Personal Space (W), Shadow Surge (R), then recast R - with everything up, slow and mark first, poke with Q, shield and shockwave with W, then dash-mark-detonate with R for the kill, watching for a bonus fear if they engaged into you mid-combo.
Skill order: Q > E > W (max R whenever it's available at 5/9/13)
Early game
Play the range game - Mistral Bolt outpokes almost every melee laner and most mages if you hold max distance, so chip away rather than trading autoattacks. Use Looming Darkness to punish wave-clear attempts or overextensions, and remember every dash or flash thrown at you is a free Gloom mark plus a fear if you follow up immediately - bait it rather than just avoid it. Rush Luden's Echo (or Malignance if you want more burst and utility) as your first core item, and since you have nothing but that conditional fear to fall back on, never push past the point where a jungler gank or all-in can punish you.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From the mid game on, position at max range behind your frontline - Vex brings damage and picks, not a frontline presence, and has no tool of her own to escape a dive. Open fights with Looming Darkness to slow and mark a priority target, then chain Mistral Bolt and the Personal Space shockwave into them while your team follows up. Save Shadow Surge to open on an isolated squishy target or finish whoever's lowest - securing the kill inside the reset window lets you immediately dash onto the next target, and once Rabadon's Deathcap is online that chain alone can swing a fight. Prioritize whichever enemy carry you can actually reach over whoever simply happens to be closest.
Pro tips
- Hover at the edge of your range on purpose rather than staying maximally safe at all times - a diver who has to dash to reach you just handed you a free fear.
- Looming Darkness fears enemies away from where the shadow lands, not away from Vex herself, so use it to peel a diver off a low-HP ally or shove someone off an objective instead of just pushing them off yourself.
- Track the 6-second reset window after any Shadow Surge hit closely in fights - chasing that kill isn't greedy, it's how the ultimate comes back up so you can chain onto the next target before the enemy team can regroup.
