How to play Viego — Wild Rift guide, combos & tips
Viego, the Ruined King, is a snowball-heavy jungle Fighter in Wild Rift whose entire game plan is built around securing one kill and wearing the corpse. Sovereign's Domination turns any takedown within 3 seconds of his damage into a possessed body, and from there his damage leans almost entirely physical — Blade of the Ruined King's current-health-percent on-hits and Heartbreaker's area burst — with a smaller pocket of magic damage from Spectral Maw's stun-orb. He's a relentless duelist and pick artist who can chain one good fight into a full team wipe, but he's fragile and largely powerless until that first kill actually lands.
Strengths
- Sovereign's Domination is his whole win condition: any enemy killed within 3 seconds of Viego's damage leaves behind a ghost that lingers for up to 8 seconds, giving him time to channel into it for 1 second and then pilot the body for a full 10 — untargetable, moving 10% faster toward enemies, wielding that champion's own basic abilities, autos, and items, healing for 7% of their max health, and getting a second, completely free cast of Heartbreaker.
- Blade of the Ruined King makes him a genuine extended-fight winner, not just a burst threat: autos already chip 2% of the target's current health, and landing any ability opens a 5-second window where his next auto against that target strikes twice for 10% AD each hit and heals him for 135% of the damage dealt.
- Heartbreaker is a flexible execute: he blinks to any nearby spot, hits every champion in the area for 110-165% AD, then dumps bonus damage and a 99% slow onto whoever is lowest on percentage health while knocking back anyone standing close to them.
- Harrowed Path hands him free stealth and tempo: the ghost's mist camouflages him and grants 25% move speed plus 45% attack speed for up to 8 seconds, enough to vanish after a kill, flank around a fight, or simply out-rotate the map.
Weaknesses
- Entirely momentum-dependent: his low survivability and assist ratings reflect a kit with almost no fallback plan if the first takedown doesn't happen, so a quiet start can leave him behind for the rest of the game.
- Extremely vulnerable to being caught first: any stun, taunt, root, or suppression that lands on Viego before he secures a kill ends the fight — and the whole chain — on the spot, since a dead Viego can't channel into anything.
- Both non-passive tools have real tells: Spectral Maw's up-to-3-second charge is visibly telegraphed, and Heartbreaker's blink-in gives alert opponents a window to flash, dash, or blink away before the burst lands.
- Low innate tankiness and no hard peel for teammates outside of a possession — if he's shut down early, he brings very little to a teamfight beyond his own kill threat.
Combos
- Spectral Maw → Blade of the Ruined King → auto: land a charged W stun (up to 1.25 seconds at max charge), thrust in with Q's active to open the 5-second ability-damage window, then auto-attack for the empowered double-strike and its heal.
- Harrowed Path → flank → Q → auto: use E's mist for camouflage and the speed and attack-speed buff to reposition unseen, then burst an isolated target with Q's passive and active plus autos to close out the kill and trigger a possession.
- Heartbreaker → possess → free Heartbreaker: blink onto the lowest-percentage-health enemy with R for the bonus damage and 99% slow; if that takedown happens within 3 seconds, channel into the body immediately for a second, completely free ultimate.
- Possess → borrowed kit → Heartbreaker: while piloting a corpse, use that champion's own basic abilities to isolate your next target, then spend the free ultimate recast to keep the chain going into a second or third kill.
Skill order: Q > E > W (max Heartbreaker whenever it's available) — Blade of the Ruined King scales the sustain and duel damage he leans on most, Harrowed Path's speed and stealth come online next for skirmishes and jungle clear, and Spectral Maw's stun is the lowest priority since just having it up matters more than its raw numbers.
Early game
Jungle efficiently and let Blade of the Ruined King's passive — 2% of current health on every auto, plus 135% healing back on any post-ability strike — keep Viego topped up through camps before his first back. Look for 2v2 or 3v3 skirmishes rather than full 5-man fights: he wants an isolated, low-health target he can finish and possess, not a straight brawl against a grouped enemy wave. His real power spike is level 5 — once Heartbreaker is online, a single gank that lands a kill can chain into a double or triple through the free ultimate recast, so time ganks around actually securing that first takedown rather than just soaking experience.
Mid & late game — teamfighting
From the mid game onward, approach fights from the side rather than head-on: Harrowed Path's mist lets Viego close in under camouflage, then Heartbreaker blinks him onto whichever enemy is lowest on percentage health, since that target eats bonus damage and gets slowed by 99% for a quarter-second — long enough to guarantee the follow-up. If that blink lands a kill within the 3-second window, channel into the corpse immediately: the free ultimate recast plus that champion's own basic abilities are often enough to string together a second or third takedown and swing the fight outright. Stay patient before the first pick lands — without an active possession he's squishy and disposable, so bait cooldowns and wait for a real opening instead of diving the front line first.
Pro tips
- Start charging Spectral Maw from a bush or fog of war whenever possible — a full 3-second charge done in the open just tells the target to sidestep before the stun lands.
- Don't waste a possession sitting still: the 10-second window and its one free ultimate cast are meant to be spent immediately on fighting, chasing, or peeling, since the timer runs out either way.
- Build Essence Reaver first for the attack damage, cooldown reduction, and mana that let him spam Q and Heartbreaker more often, then lean into execute items — Lord Dominik's Regards, Mortal Reminder, and The Collector all amplify Q's current-health-percent damage and help finish low-health targets outright.
